County supervisors were expected to vote Tuesday on whether to continue or discontinue the county patrol in its present form.
Of the 82 counties in Mississippi, only Lauderdale and Wayne Counties have a county patrol, working under the direction of the board of supervisors. But the vote didn't happen.
After clearing the boardroom for an executive session that lasted about an hour, the supervisors announced a committee of supervisors Ray Boswell and Jimmie Smith, board attorney Rick Barry, county administrator Rex Hiatt and Sheriff Billy Sollie would first study how to handle potential changes.
"We have asked them to meet and come back with a proposal on possibly making changes with the county patrol issue," said board president Craig Hitt.
The committee will report back to the Board at its next scheduled meeting on Feb. 3.
Sheriff Sollie and some board members have said they favor using the five positions as animal control officers or deputies working under the sheriff's department.
