WTOK-TV news director John Johnson has been named to the Meridian Community College board of trustees. His term begins July 1.

Johnson will replace C.D. Smith, who is resigning from the MCC Board after 17 years of service. Smith was recently appointed by the governor to the state College Board.

“We are honored to have a servant leader of John Johnson’s stature on the MCC board,” said MCC president Dr. Scott Elliott. “He is the consummate professional in his industry as well as a wonderful community servant. His association with MCC most certainly adds to the credibility and esteem of the institution.”

Elliott also said he hated to see Smith leave the board, calling Smith a very positive representative of the college and an outstanding advocate for the entire Mississippi Community College System.

A native of Hattiesburg, Johnson is a graduate of Rust College in Holly Springs, majoring in social science. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Iowa.

“I am excited about serving on the MCC Board,” Johnson said. “I believe MCC plays a vital role in economic and community development in the East Mississippi and West Alabama region, and I want to do what I can to see MCC meet its mission of improving the quality of life in our community.”

Other members of the MCC Board are Tommy Dulaney, Dr. Ronnye Purvis, Ralph Young, Jr., and Alex Weddington.
