Meridian Native a Super Bowl Champ

Updated: Mon 11:12 AM, Jan 27, 2003

It's been a long ride for Kenyatta Walker, from blue chip prep prospect at Meridian High School, to All-American at the University of Florida, to first round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Bucaneers.

That journey reached a pinnacle Sunday night, when Walker earned another name: Super Bowl Champion.

The former MHS star started at offensive tackle for the Bucs, as they beat the Oakland Raiders 48-21 in Super Bowl 37 before a sell out crowd in San Diego.

Walker is the second Meridian native in the past four years to claim a Super Bowl ring. Former Meridian High star Dexter Mcleon earned one as a defensive back for the St. Louis Rams in 2000.

Walker's season had its ups and downs this year. A starter at the beginning of the season, he lost his job early in the year. By mid-season, though, he was back in the starter's role, and on Sunday, he played a big role in opening holes for running and providing protection for quarterback Brad Johnson.
