The National Weather Service sent a storm survey official to Lawrence County where a microburst occurred just one miles west of Monticello this past Tuesday. Unofficial reports suggested winds of up to 138 mph, however their survey turned up winds closer to 75 mph.

The survey team says that the damage caused by the storm was not consistent with 138 mph winds. While numerous pine trees were snapped and uprooted and damage to power lines, roof and structural damage was limited.

Using the damage, the team of meteorologists was able to use guidelines set by the Enhance Fujita scale to determine the estimated wind speeds.
