The topic of property insurance was discussed Monday at the 4th Annual Presidents' Forum on Meeting Coastal Challenges in New Orleans.

Insurability is a top concern for residents and businesses on the coasts of Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana.

Insurance commissioners and others focused on ways to expand insurance and reduce its cost.

"I think what we probably need to look at is something, maybe have a catastrophic reinsurance act as a backdrop," said Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney. "It spreads the risk among a lot of folks. The main thing that we need to do is to educate folks about the ability to have flood insurance in addition to wind insurance."

Representatives of Florida, West Virginia and Puerto Rico also attended the conference.
