Hurley: Don't Sacrifice Arts

Meridian Rotarians heard about the Meridian Children's Chorus on Monday. Its founder, Vivian Hurley, was the guest speaker.

The chorus continues to rehearse for its performance at the international choral festival in England later this summer. Hurley said music should be part of every child's education.

"In our schools, unfortunately, when it comes to cutting on the budget the first thing to go is the arts," said Hurley. "Unfortunately music seems to be the first art that's chosen. Some of the things that the chorus does provide are the opportunity for learning stage presence, the ability to speak and perform in front of people."

Two young musicians performed on instruments Monday. The chorus leaves for Canterbury, England July 29.
