The Rev. Duncan M. Gray, III, will become the next bishop of the Episcopal diocese of Mississippi, the third generation in his family to head the diocese.

Church officials announced the appointment Monday. Gray will replace the Rev. Alfred Marble, III, in a Feb. 9 ceremony.

Marble has headed the diocese since 1993. Gray's father, the Rev. Duncan M. Gray, Jr., served as bishop of the diocese from 1974-1993.

His grandfather, the Rev. Duncan M. Gray, was bishop from 1943-1966.

Gray is a native of Canton and graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1971. He earned a master of divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1975.

Gray has been the rector of Saint Peter's in Oxford since 1985.
