Meridian Voters Make Their Choices

Meridian, Miss.

Incumbent Mayor Cheri Barry defeated her Republican challenger, William Bond Compton, Jr., to win the GOP nomination.

Percy Bland defeated Democratic challenger Rod Amos to win his party's nomination.

Two independent candidates are running for mayor as well:
Wally Hudnall and Walter Patton.

The general election is June 4.

Runoffs will decide some city council races in Meridian.
In Ward 2, incumbent Mary Perry is in a May 21 runoff with Kenneth Dustin Markham.

In Ward 4, there is a very close race to make the May 21 runoff. Longtime incumbent Jesse Palmer was in third place Tuesday night but was very close to Craig Houston's total. Absentee/affidavit ballots could change who makes the runoff. Kim Houston led the field and is definitely in the runoff.

Incumbent Ward 5 councilman Bobby Smith was defeated in the Republican Primary. Randy Hammon won 62% of the vote.
