Around 9:40 a.m. a lone black male entered The Citizens Bank in Scooba wearing dark clothing and a white hat with black stripes. Police say he pulled a silver automatic handgun and demanded cash.
The suspect was able to get away, leaving on foot with an undetermined amount of cash. According to witnesses, he later met up with another individual.
"A witness stated that they saw him get into a silver vehicle," said Scooba Police Chief Stacey Dean.
The make and model of the car were not immediately known. The small, four-door car did not have a license plate.
A vehicle fitting the description was stopped in Alabama Monday afternoon with only one person in it. That individual was taken into custody and later arrested.
Police also arrested a second man later in the evening. Neither man has been charged, but formal charges are expected sometime Tuesday.
The Scooba Police Department is using the help of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the FBI and Kemper and Sumter County Sheriff's Departments to help solve the crime.
This is the first incident at the only bank in Scooba in about 20 years and some of the locals are shocked.
"From what I've seen, there are some concerned citizens," Dean said. "But I would like for them to know that we are going to deal with this matter expeditiously. And we are going to have 24-hour protection."
Police were able to recover some of the money that was taken from the bank Monday.
