Meridian, Mississippi Meridian's general election is less than two weeks away and on Thursday night, the candidates took to the campaign trail.
The Meridian-Lauderdale County NAACP sponsored what it called a "Meet and Greet" for the candidates. All of the mayoral and city council candidates were invited to meet voters and talk about plans to lead the city. Three of the four mayoral candidates showed up. Democrat primary winner Percy Bland was unable to attend due to a prior commitment, but Bland's father represented his son. Organizer Melba Clark says it's a good way for citizens to learn more about who is on the ballot.
"Most people don't have an opportunity to talk to their elected officials over the next four years," Clark says. "This is an opportunity for you to be face to face, and say to them what you expect of them, and say to them what you want them to do while they are in office."
The general election is Tuesday, June 4th.
