One Dead in Newton Plane Crash

Newton, Miss. A Cessna 172 crashed Wednesday about 9:30 a.m. at the Newton Municipal Airport.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol says 57-year-old Rodney Keith Usry of Hickory died, while instructor Tommy Rose of Hickory was airlifted to Jeff Anderson Regional Medical in Meridian, where he was in intensive care. He's the son of Tommy Rose who died in a 2002 plane crash at the National Championship Air Races in Nevada.

Usry's body will undergo an autopsy in Jackson.

Newton Police Chief Harvey Curry said the plane struck power lines while trying to land. First responders found it upside down on a hill near the edge of the runway.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
