A/C Units Stolen from Daycare Center

Meridian, Miss. Three air conditioners were stolen overnight from Kids World Daycare Center on 24th Avenue in Meridian. The owner says she can't believe someone would do something like that.

The loss of the window units meant the center had to change its plans for the day to protect 45 children from the heat.

Director Carlene Davis she can't imagine the type of person who would steal from a day care.

"It'd have to be someone that's ruthless, just don't care. Someone that's just ugly, you know," Davis said.

The building does have some central air, but it doesn't extend to all areas of the building. Employees had to move to different rooms and areas while trying to keep the schedule as close to normal as possible.

Davis says right now she just counts herself lucky she wasn't at the center when the theft took place.

Officials say they hope have new units in place by Thursday.

Police Capt. Dean Harper says, unfortunately, this type of crime happens this time of year.

"As the weather warms up, a lot of people go and steal these air conditioners out of homes and businesses like this one on 24th Avenue," said Harper. "It's one of those crimes that's really hard to investigate because there's no evidence left behind."

Davis says she expects a lot of questions from parents about the children's safety.

"That means a whole lot to make sure they're O.K. And it worries me because when parents bring their kids, they rely on me to make sure that their kids are safe and O.K. It's a concern," she said. "And I'm a parent, and I am concerned. I'm quite sure that I will have a lot of parents this evening that will have time to stop and inquire."

There are steps you can take to help prevent your air conditioner from being stolen. Securing it with a 2-by-4 or a piece of rebar can make your unit much harder to steal.
