New Neshoba General Open for Business

Meridian, Mississippi The new, $19 million Neshoba County General Hospital officially opened on Sunday.

There was standing room only during a ceremony to celebrate the new addition to Neshoba County General Hospital. Those in attendance were then treated to a tour of the facility, which features a new state-of-the-art emergency facility and two dozen patient suites.

"Well, I think it's just a wonderful thing for the people of Neshoba County," Choctaw Tribal Chief Phyliss J. Anderson said. "Not only that, but it's also good for our tribe here because we have our tribal members here and I'm looking forward to a continuing partnership with Neshoba County."

"There's still approximately a year's worth of work to go on renovations and other various reconfigurations for the existing hospital to be part of the complex," Neshoba County Administrator Benjie Coats said. "We're extremely excited this day finally arrived."

The hospital benefits the community in a number of ways, one being economic development. An area that offers quality healthcare often draws more people than areas without the proper care. The hospital already employees around 500 people and with the new addition, an extra 75 jobs will be made available.

"I mean, this is the kind of thing that makes a community proud," Congressman Gregg Harper said. "And it helps not just this county, but surrounding counties that help on healthcare and that will do an incredible amount to help folks all over this region."

"I believe that when you can bring this building here and when you have people who are coming here to work in this community, then that always brings economic development up because these people that are working here or are spending time here as well," Anderson added. "So that brings our economy up."

This comes as Neshoba General Hospital is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The new section is roughly 52,600 square feet. County officials say it could generate as much as $50 million each year.
