A 16-year-old girl accused of fatally stabbing a classmate Monday afternoon has been charged with murder.

Wilcox County District Attorney Ed Greene said the charge was filed Tuesday against Toni Rena Kimbrough in the death of 16-year-old Ashley Carter. The tenth-grader was stabbed several times with a steak knife at Wilcox Central High School while she waited to board a school bus.

The attack happened shortly after 3:00 p.m. Carter died about an hour later at a hospital in Camden.

Greene said Kimbrough was charged as an adult. He also said the girls had been involved in a month-long feud over a boy.

Ashley's mother, Helen Carter, told NewsCenter 11 the school had ignored several warning signs of trouble between the girls.

State Rep. James Thomas of Selma, who has been principal at Wilcox Central for 14 years, said it was the first time a fight between students turned violent.

Counselors were summoned to the high school Tuesday to help grieving students cope with Ashley's death.
