Mississippi Senator Trent Lott discussed Meridian's application for an $18 grant from the federal government's Hope 6 program in a statewide conference call Thursday. It would be used to rebuild the now closed Victory Village.
"We've only been able to get one Hope 6 project approved in Mississippi. That's Biloxi. I think that's a really good program," said Lott. "I think Meridian is a good prospect for the future and we're going to keep working with them until we get it done.
Derwin Jackson, executive director of the Meridian Housing Authority, has returned from a trip to Washington, D.C., seeking the funding. He said he is optimistic and hopes to hear something next month.
