Patrol Car Sponsors?

A company named Government Acquisition, Inc., contacted Hinds County with an offer to lease them new police cars at one dollar per year if they could put ads on the cars. Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie decided it was worth checking out.

"They have advised us that the size of our department and the number of people living in our county we would be authorized 10 vehicles if we make application," said Sollie.

The ads would be painted on the hood, the trunk, even the sides, mostly for national firms.

"McDonalds, some of your larger national businesses, your phone companies," Sollie said are among the possibilities. "Some local advertisers could be available."

At one dollar a year per leased car, how much would the county save?

"Right now, to fully equip a patrol car, a new car with new radios, new lights and sirens, cages, you're looking at $25,000 to $28,000 per vehicle," said Sollie.

Such a deal would have to be approved by the supervisors who heard about it for the first time Thursday. Sollie said he has mixed feelings.

"I don't think we're the first. We're certainly not going to be the last to be involved in this procedure," the sheriff said.
