In some places in Newton, you'd be hard pressed to see signs that a tornado hit in December 2002. In others, you might guess it hit Wednesday.
Despite a lot of work that is still left to do, city officials say they're pleased with the cleanup efforts so far. Officials estimate the cleanup is about 80 percent complete.
But there is still a good deal of private property where little or nothing has been done.
The city has sent letters to property owners encouraging them to do needed repairs.
Optimistic estimates for completion of the project are spring, but Mayor
Hamp Beatty said, given all the damage, it could realistically be the end of the year before everything is back to where it was before the tornado.
