Confusion Over Garbage Fees

In an attempt to let taxpayers know where they stand with the garbage fee, the tax collector's office has a new procedure.

"In the past when we sent out a statement, it would be for the current year and the current year only," said tax collector Stanley Shannon. "Like for this year it was 2006. Now when we send out a statement, it is for the current year and the past year, if they owed the past year."

In other words the new bills reflect any unpaid balances from the past. The 2005 balance becomes delinquent April 1, 2006. The bill for 2006 becomes delinquent April 1, 2007.

The annual garbage fee is $60 but there are exemptions in place for people who disabled or over age 65. Failure to pay the fee by the deadline gives the tax collector the right to withhold your car tag.
