Meridian's annual Arbor Day celebration included the plating of an oak tree at the 22nd Avenue exit at I-20/59

Seven dignitaries helped plant the first of almost 300 new trees that will beautify the area.

Mayor John Robert Smith said projects like this are very important.

"A beautiful entrance to a community says that the people take pride in their community and that they care about what others think as they pass by their front door," said Smith.

Meridian was recognized as a Tree City USA on Arbor Day 1991 and has received this distinction every year since.
