Education Funding Sought

Mississippi lawmakers will spend time this week trying to identify funding sources for an education package approved earlier this month.

The legislature already has decided how much money the education budgets will get, but not where it will get the money.

Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Jack Gordon said he plans to pass a funding bill out of his committee this week. While he won't divulge all its components, he said the bill will resemble funding packages previously proposed by the House and Senate.

In the past, bonds, loans, lawsuit settlement funds and other one-time money sources have been considered.

The House proposed borrowing $170 million from agencies' ending cash balances, to be repaid over two years.

Gordon says his bill will include a smaller figure, to be paid back in five years.
