Woman Still in Critical Condition after Shooting

Newton, Miss. Shortly after 1:00 AM Saturday morning, Newton Police responded to this house on Scanlan Street to a report of a woman who had been shot. Brenda Buckley was transported to Anderson Regional Medical Center, and then on to the University of Mississippi Medical Center where she remains in critical condition. After the initial investigation, police found that Buckley, who is married, had been shot by her boyfriend Ronnie Dale Davis after he became jealous. Chief Harvey Curry says other people were at the house at the time of the shooting, and have helped in solving this case.

"At this point in time we have not met any resistance, and so far everybody is cooperating."

Chief Curry tells us that Davis left the scene before officers arrived shortly after 1:00 AM Saturday morning, but they were able to take him into custody later on that morning without incident.

"He had called the Newton Police Department and spoke with Detective Bud May, and said he was going to turn himself in, but he never showed up. I then received a call from Chief Deputy Randy Patrick with the Newton County Sheriff's Office, and we met here at the police department where he turned him over to me."

Violent crime is rare in Newton, and Curry doesn't believe crime is on the increase since this stemmed from a domestic situation.

"No one ever knows what's going on in someone's house. It happens everywhere. We always wish everybody would try to reach some other kind of solution, but they chose not to."

Davis remains in the Newton County Jail on an Attempted Murder charge. His bond has not yet been set.
