United Blood Services has announced it will close its collection center in Meridian as Nov. 1.
It will mean some layoffs. The company says it's aiming for greater efficiency and the policy will mean changes in Meridian and its other locations.
However, director JW Chapman says UBS will keep operating its lab here and will still serve local hospitals.
Chapman says employees are being offered severance packages and the opportunity to apply for positions that are open elsewhere in the company.
UBS will also conduct mobile blood drives in the Meridian area and will notify regular donors of the times and locations.
Chapman says blood donations are still needed.
