Fed Dollars Help Bonita

The federal government has allocated $500,000 to Meridian to fix the dam at Bonita.

Mayor John Robert Smith said the city couldn't have done it by itself.

"We didn't have a half million dollars to fix Bonita in the general fund and council didn't put it in this budget year, nor did we ask them to put that kind of money in this budget year," said Smith. "Now we have it, federal dollars, which means taxpayers in every state in the union are helping us fix Bonita."

The mayor said bids must be taken, so it will be late spring or early summer before the work can actually get underway.
