Education Behind Bars

Some inmates at the Lauderdale County Jail have taken advantage of a second chance to get an education.

Classes to help inmates obtain General Equivalency Diplomas are held at the jail every week, through a partnership with Meridian Community College.

"We have taken a systematic approach through diagnostic tests to get them to the point where they need to take the actual GED tests and move on, either with college studies or vocational skills, so that they can truly have a chance at being rehabilitated when they leave the Lauderdale County Jail," said instructor Wayne Bass.

Seven inmates recently completed the GED course and received their GEDs.
