Carl Wesley Bell
The Sheriff's Department has not released whether they are searching for other suspects, but one man is facing charges as an accessory after the fact.
"Warrants are being issued for Carl Wesley Bell of the Espey Road location we were at yesterday," said Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie. "He is being charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and two counts of accessory after the fact to murder."
Bell was quickly discovered when investigators realized he owned the mobile home where one of the suspected victims lived. And it was something in that mobile home that raised their suspicion.
"Based upon what they found, and certainly we can't release that information until our trial date, led them to believe there had been a violent act inside the trailer, itself," Sheriff Sollie said. "That just caused them to refine their search, itself."
After broadening their search, one of the investigators stumbled upon a human bone protruding from the ground, which in turn, led them to the discovery of the graves.
The autopsy was completed on Friday morning. DNA samples were taken from the supposed victims should provide results on the true identities of these people.
But the coroner says because only skeletal remains were left, finding the exact cause of death could be tricky.
"Unfortunately, if it was something manual as far as strangulation, toxicology, such as overdose something like that, that's going to be null and void because of the weather and everything else," explained Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler. "Hopefully if there was a bullet wound of stab wound, we can match something up with that. But other than that, unless it was a traumatic death, it's going to be hard to find out cause of death."
The Sheriff's Department hopes to learn their identities soon.
