Philadelphia's Steve Wilkerson Honored

Philadelphia, Miss. Businesses and community leaders in Neshoba County were honored Monday night for their achievements over the past year.

The Neshoba County Community Development Partnership hosted a banquet at the Neshoba County Coliseum.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards.

Citizen of the Year went to Steve Wilkerson. Wilkerson is no stranger to winning awards. Over the years he and his business, "Steve's On The Square", have taken home the Mayor's Award and Retailer of the Month.

Wilkerson told Newscenter 11 just what the award means to him, and his plans for the future.

"You never think about something like that happening to you and when it does its just like, 'wow'," said Wilkerson. "You look at the names on the trophy of previous winners and you think, I'm in some pretty high cotton with this group of folks," said Wilkerson. "Well I'm just going to keep working, keep volunteering, keep serving the community. I have an ice cream business now where we ride around and give away free ice cream and so in my spare time I do that."

Wilkerson is a former two-term alderman, past president of the Philadelphia Rotary Club, and volunteers annually for the Ham Jam Arts Festival.

The Small Business of the Year was awarded to Magnolia and Sassafras. Neshoba County General Hospital was named Large Business of the Year.
