The presidents of Mississippi's eight public universities say they won't ask the College Board to raise tuition this year.

Board members applauded Thursday when the Council of Presidents announced the resolution to keep tuition level, at least for now.

Incoming Commissioner of Higher Education David Potter says the presidents based their pledge on the Legislature's decision to direct $70 million more to universities than they had originally planned for the fiscal year that starts July 1.

Potter says legislators intended for those funds to help keep tuition affordable. In-state tuition has risen 28.7 percent over the last three years.
