Carver Middle School marked Black History Month with an awareness program Friday, featuring Meridian obstetrician Dr. Ronnye Purvis. Purvis told the students that they shouldn't be afraid to step out and take risks, because otherwise they'll likely miss many opportunities.
"Having faith in God, having faith in your own abilities, will allow you to progress in life and be successful," said Dr. Purvis. "I'm a living example of hard work, a good foundation from your family, community leaders. People took a chance with me. And because of that I'm willing to take chances with them."
The annual program also featured music from the Carver Middle School band.
