Wamble Takes Spelling Crown

Updated: Wed 10:00 AM, Feb 26, 2003

Lauderdale County has a new spelling bee champion.

Jake Wamble, a 6th grader at West Lauderdale, was the last one standing out of 99 contestants Tuesday at Meridian Community College. He won by correctly spelling "exonerate."

"I thought it was pretty cool that I could get that word," said Wamble,
"because I didn't even study all that much on my list."

Wamble will represent Lauderdale County in the Mississippi Spelling
Bee in Jackson Mar. 26.

Southeast Lauderdale 8th grader Nykolas Alford placed second. He said he was happy to reach that point in the contest.

"it's really important to me because some people didn't think I could do it. And I'm glad that I did," said Alford.

The Lauderdale County Spelling Bee is sponsored by The Meridian Star.
