State Rep. Tommy Horne of Meridian, a veteran of 25 years in the Mississippi House, will not seek reelection this year.
His son, Steve Horne, 44, said Tuesday he would run for the post now held by his father. Horne previously ran unsuccessfully for Meridian City Council and Mississippi Senate. He is an insurance executive in Meridian.
The elder Horne, an attorney and one-time Democrat, represents portions of Lauderdale and Clarke counties as an Independent. He is one of three independents in the House.
Horne is chairman of the powerful House Rules Committee.
Steve Horne has qualified to run as a Republican.
