Authorities Urge Holiday Awareness

Lauderdale County, Miss. During the Christmas rush, local authorities say you should still be on the lookout for suspicious activity.

Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says it is easy not to be as vigilant right now with so much going on, but says your number one priority should be to know what is going on around you and your property at all times.

"If you see something that doesn't look right, something suspicious, someone hanging out somewhere, call 911," Calhoun says. "Let them send an officer or deputy to determine whether or not that person is up to criminal activity or at least determine who they are. We'd much rather do that than have to come take a report of someone who has been assaulted or had their property stolen."

The Meridian Police Department has stepped up its patrols in local store parking lots to curb crime.
