Last month the city council eliminated the requirement that city employees turn in receipts in order to be reimbursed for travel expenses.

The state auditor had ruled payment per diem was legal instead. Mayor John Robert Smith vetoed the action and had city clerk Ed Skipper read the law.

"Upon return from such travel the officer employee shall provide receipts of transportation, lodging, meals, fees and any expenses incurred during travel," read Skipper.

The mayor has requested an attorney general's opinion on whether the auditor's position is correct.

The council sustained the veto three to two with Bobby Smith and Jesse Palmer opposed.
