One of the most anticipated highway projects in this area is the four-laning of Highway 19, from Meridian to Philadelphia.

The work on one phase of that project will begin soon, the five-mile stretch of road that goes from Collinsville to the Newton County line.

It's a major first step in getting the entire stretch four-laned. Community leaders in Neshoba and Lauderdale counties say progress on this project is good for both communities.

Even though this first phase will only run to the Newton County line, David Vowell, president of the Community Development Partnership, says it will still benefit Neshoba County residents. Highway 19 runs from Lauderdale through a small portion of Newton County and then into Neshoba County. Vowell said the best part is that it gets this project started.

"This is awesome news for us," said Vowell. "For safety and the industrial activity we have, and you can talk all day about the tourism opportunities, with groups like the Pearl River Resort. "

And while it will be years before this project stretches all the way to Philadelphia, Vowell said he's glad to see the county a step closer to getting four-lane access. He said he believes local residents will play a large role in making sure this project stays on schedule, by making sure elected officials know its importance.

The entire project, from Meridian to Philadelphia, will take place over a span of several years. The first phase will begin within the month. The second, going from the Newton County line to House. Miss., is expected to begin by July 2009. The final phase, from House to Philadelphia, is slated for completion in 2012.
