A Meridian-based Army Reserve unit reported early to active duty Thursday as part of the military buildup to a possible war in the
Middle East.

Officials say a mobilization ceremony originally planned for Friday in Meridian was canceled.

About 70 soldiers with the 1181st Army Transportation Battalion joined the dozens of Mississippi National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve units that have been activated as part of a partial mobilization authorized by the president.

The unit reported to its mobilization station at Fort Eustis, Virginia. The Meridian unit's mission is to perform terminal operation services and arrange for the loading and unloading of cargo from ships and barges.

The soldiers will conduct administrative and training requirements before the transition to active duty.
