COA Denies Claims

The request by a former Lauderdale County teacher for post-conviction relief has again been denied, this time by the Mississippi Court of Appeals.

Larry Wayne Mckenzie first sought relief through Lauderdale County Circuit Court, after pleading guilty to statutory rape of a student.

In his appeal, McKenzie argued that his plea was not voluntary and his sentence was unfair.

The higher court rejected all claims.

In an unrelated case, Jason Wright appealed his conviction for statutory rape, for which he was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined

The Mississippi Court of Appeal rejected Wright's claims that jury instructions were flawed, among other alleged trial court errors.

The court affirmed the sentence and the fine.
