Lauderdale County, Miss. The Mississippi Department of Human Services says its fraud unit arrested eight people in Lauderdale County Friday.
All are accused of defrauding the food stamp program, now known as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).
They were identified as: Stephanie M. Bynum, 39; T. Vanessa Campbell, 45; Nicole Clearman, 36; Stephanie Gordon, 37; Stacy L. Hill, 48; Tara Lewis, 36; Janey Overstreet, 36, and Amanda M. Weems, 29;
DHS says fraud involving SNAP and TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) is usually due to clients withholding income or household information that could make them ineligible for benefits.
DHS says almost 30% of Lauderdale County residents were enrolled in SNAP in 20-13 and more than $28 million in benefits were issued.
