The Meridian-Lauderdale County Chapter of the NAACP is having a "Freedom Weekend" this Friday and Saturday.
Its annual Freedom Fund Banquet will be Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Council of Organizations, featuring Jackson State University president, Dr. Ronald Mason.
The theme of Freedom Weekend is "Footprints of Our Ancestors."
"So we don't want our community, especially African-Americans, to forget the struggle," said Willie Mae Brown of the NAACP Women's Auxiliary. "That those who have made it easier for them to be where they are now, and a lot of people have given their lives for us to be where we are now."
The NAACP will honor six pioneering women in the civil rights movement at a 12 noon luncheon Friday at the Boys and Girls Club.
It is also sponsoring an educational presentation on slavery Aaturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Art Connection.
