The preliminary autopsy results on a woman who died in a Meridian city jail cell were released Wednesday.
Forty-three-year-old Sharon Scott was found dead around 4:00 a.m. Apr. 11 during a routine cell check. She had been arrested several hours earlier and charged with several traffic violations.
"The report indicated that it was suicide," said MPD Chief Benny Dubose. "They referred to the cause of death as ligature hanging, which simply means using an object to hang yourself, whether it's shoe strings, sheets, ropes or whatever."
Investigators say Scott was found hanged to death with a bed sheet in her holding cell. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling an ongoing probe into the matter.
