The East Mississippi Drug Task Force made what it describes as a major bust Wednesday night.
Its drug interdiction unit seized close to 18 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop on the interstate in Lauderdale County, between Toomsuba and Kewanee.
Fourteen packages were hidden in a compartment in the car's frame and were covered with grease to try to disguise the smell.
Officials say Jesus Duarte of Houston, Texas is now being held for federal agents who will take over the case.
"We have been utilizing our deputies over the last 18 months, attempting to identify persons who are trafficking illegal drugs or proceeds from illegal drugs, on the interstate systems throughout our nation," said Sheriff Billy Sollie.
Sollie said the estimated street value of the cocaine is $1 million.
