Social Security Changes

Meridian, Miss. As the start of school approaches, the Social Security Administration is announcing some changes that are important not only for parents to know, but everyone nationwide.

The first change will begin next month. As part of an effort to help prevent identity theft, starting August 1st the agency will no longer provide printouts of Social Security numbers for people who have lost their cards.

"But of course we will be able to assist the individual in requesting replacement cards," says Heather Reed, an operations supervisor with the Social Security Administration.

Reed says it usually takes between 7 to 10 business days for a new Social Security card to arrive by mail.

Meanwhile, the second change that the agency is implementing will take effect this fall.

"October 1st, the Social Security field offices will no longer be able to provide benefit verification letters," says Reed. "So, if an individual is needing benefit verification, they've lost the one that goes out each year in January, and they need to provide that to a third party, then the individual will have to either call our national toll-free number 1-800-772-1213, or my favorite option on this is to create an on-line account through the Social Security website."

Reed is encouraging people to take advantage of the service that's provided on the Internet by the Social Security Administration. It's an online account called My Social Security. She says this is a secure account where people can access their Social Security information quickly and conveniently.
