An all female leadership will head the Meridian City Council with the election of Mary Perry as president and Barbara Henson as vice president Tuesday.

Ward 1 Councilman Dr. George Thomas and Mayor John Robert Smith called it historic.

"Well it's particularly historic with Miss Perry's election which will be the first African American black female to ever head this council, I believe," said Dr. Thomas, who served as president during the past year.

"And the first time the president and vice president have been female members of the council," said Mayor Smith.

Perry and Henson will take over their new positions July 1 and serve through June 30, 2003.
