Sending kids off to school for the first day can be tough on parents, but it is especially hard on parents of first time students. Sunday the Meridian Public School District worked to make the day easy for all people involved.
With loads of school supplies on hand, parents spent the day Sunday visiting Poplar Springs Elementary in Meridian to meet their children's new teachers.
" I'm going to be crying. I'm going to have pictures taken of her-every step of the way. I'm going to be crying though," said an excited Treva Kendricks.
Treva Kendricks is sending her daughter off to start kindergarten. She says she is happy for her daughter to learn and have fun, but also sad to see her leave the house.
"They gave us a lot of good information that we can read up on. Iit was very helpful I'm glad we came," said Kendricks, who attended the event to meet her daughter's new teacher.
During the event, the parents and students met the new principal at Poplar Springs, LaVonda Germany, who previously worked at Oakland Heights. She explained the school rules to the parents, but says one of her main goals is to make the parents feel more comfortable about dropping their kids off on the first day.
"Parents have always been a strong asset to poplar springs elementary and that is known district wide. They are the key to the success of our children and we are looking forward to continuing that tradition here at poplar springs," said Germany.
The excitement was obvious on the faces of the kids and parents, but also for the school staff. Teachers have been working to make sure everything runs smoothly Monday.
"We just know that all these little boys and girls are coming to our classrooms and they are excited about what they see and also what we will have to offer tomorrow. We will be dancing and singing, playing on the playground, writing in journals, and finding out about each child," said kindergarten teacher, Heather Behringer.
It appears the young kids understand that after a fun summer-it is time to get to work. However, teachers assure the parents that there will also be plenty of fun.
