Weems Mental Health Center broke ground on a new facility in Meridian Tuesday. It will house the children's and youth program.
Maurice Kahlmus, the executive director of Weems Mental Health Center, said the new building would help the organization provide psychiactric, nursing, counseling, and case management services to the Lauderdale County area.
"Although the building we're in is a pretty, older home, the staff is thrilled to think that we're going to be in a modern facility," said Kahlmus.
The new $1.3 million children and youth center will be built at 24th Avenue and 20th Street next to the existing Weems building.
