Gov. Haley Barbour Thursday declared a state of emergency in Mississippi, due to the impending threat from Tropical Storm Gustav.

Locals are preparing, not just for the storm but for evacuees. If you have not yet started preparing for Gustav, now may be the time.

As Gustav impacts the northern Caribbean Islands, officials at the Red Cross and United Way in Meridian, and even hotels, are preparing for possible impact from Gustav.

The United Way will put its 211 Network into 24-hour operation. The 211 Network makes finding information easier.

"United Way state-wide in conjunction with our office here in east Mississippi, we began the 211 program, and we launched that last year," said executive director Thad Quarles. "It's a great way to stay connected with what's going on. If you need to know what shelters are open and where to go to get food and water."

All you have to do to obtain this information is pick up the phone and dial 2-1-1.

Area hotels are already filling up, and at last check, the nearest hotels with availability were in Tupelo and Memphis.

"We've been receiving phone calls for several days," said hotel manager Dede Mogollon. "From what I understand, the majority of the hotels in Meridian are already sold out, with both emergency services in preparation for the hurricane as well as evacuees."

Gustav will certainly be close to this area, so it's important to start preparing before supplies are exhausted.

The most important things to remember are food and water. You'll need at least three days worth of supplies for each member of your family, and don't forget about your pets. You should also remember to stock up batteries, and make sure your flashlights and battery-powered radios work.

Local shelters are being organized, and if you plan to go to a shelter, remember to make plans for your pets since most shelters won't allow them. Also remember that you will need to bring all essential items like medicines and blankets, and don't forget board games to help keep the kids occupied.
