United Blood Services is concerned that Hurricane Gustav and Labor Day may be a double blow in efforts to get blood donations.

That's why UBS is asking people who are able to donate to come in over the weekend and give.

Labor Day weekend is a time when blood is often in short supply, because of an increase in car accidents, and a decrease in people giving. Both of those could be multiplied because of Gustav.

"Currently we do have a promotion going on," said UBS director J.W. Chapman. "We call it a labor of love. We'll be giving away a weekend for two at the Pearl River Resort, so that's one of the rewards donors have for coming in and donating this weekend. "

UBS will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. until donors stop coming, and Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m. UBS is located at 1115 25th Avenue in Meridian.
