Meridian police say allegations that an officer ran over a suspect Wednesday evening are false.
The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 11 South and 5th Street.
Police Chief Benny Dubose said a suspect, wanted on a previous warrant for fleeing police, jumped out of the vehicle and ran again. The chief said a patrol car camera caught on tape what happened.
"The patrol car, according to the video, was traveling about 25 miles an hour. The individual slipped or tripped or fell or whatever," said Dubose. "The officer hit brakes and it was a dirt, wet alley way. The officer veered to the right to try to avoid 'running over' the individual. He did bump his leg. He was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures."
Dubose said the injuries to Herbert Ashford were minor and he has since been released from the hospital. Ashford remains behind bars awaiting an arraignment in December.
