It has been more than three months since four West Alabama churches were damaged or destroyed by fire. Three college students were arrested in the case. Two of them attended Birmingham Southern College. And Sunday, some B.S.C. students did their part in helping the churches rebuild.
Every Spring the Birmingham Southern College Concert Choir goes on tour. They never attempt to raise money from their concerts. This year was a little different. At each stop, the choir is collecting money for the West Alabama churches that were damaged by fire. Choir members say they feel like they have to give back because one of those arrested, Ben Moseley, was a former member of the choir.
"We do feel very obligated to help and that's why we're here. Everybody in the choir is very excited to be down here and to be a part of this rebuilding process by singing and raising money," said Martin Landry, choir member.
The Spring Tour took the Concert Choir to South Carolina and Georgia. At every stop, they took a collection that was put into the college's fund that will be given to the churches rebuilding funds. While that fundraising will help the West Alabama churches, the Choir said they wanted to get more directly involved.
"They also said they would like to go to an area of the state that was near where some of the churches were and perhaps lend their personal support by performing in that area," said Lester Seigel, choir director.
"We want to be a part of the restoration of these churches, but we would like to connect more than with the churches, but with the communities that these churches serve," said Stewart Jackson, B.S.C. Chaplain.
The church in West Alabama where they chose to perform was Livingston First Presbyterian. The music director for the church is John Brown. He is also a former member of the Birmingham Southern College Concert Choir.
