During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, east Mississippi and west Alabama received food and other disaster relief supplies from Texas.
Now the people in Texas need help, and Seventh Day Adventist Church in Meridian is doing what it can to help the Houston area bounce back from Hurricane Ike.
They're working with ACTS, which stands for Active Communities That Serve, gathering financial donations as well as food.
The food will feed Houston Police as well as Houston Fire & Rescue and other first responders who are working on relief efforts in greater Houston.
"We all went through a major hurricane, as we know, just a few years ago with Katrina. A lot of people may not be aware of this, but the state of Texas sent us twenty-one tractor trailer loads of donated goods when Katrina hit within just a few days. So we're trying to, not just respond to them, not just a tit-for-tat thing, but we want to be able to reach out to them like they did to us as well," said Pastor Carlis Clinton.
The ACTS kitchen is capable of serving up to 5500 people per day. Food and financial donations are still needed and can be taken to Seventh Day Adventist Church on Highway 39. They say gallon-sized cans of food, as well as water, are in high need for this effort.
