A man was shot at a family gathering in Newton, Miss., Sunday, and later died of his injuries.

The suspect, 41-year-old Thurman Arrington, was initially charged with aggravated assault, but now faces a murder charge in the death of 27-year-old Shasta Smith.

Smith was transported to a hospital in Jackson where he died Monday.

Authorities say the shooting happened at 200 Heritage Street, where Smith's family was having a birthday party for his sister.

According to witnesses, Arrington , the boyfriend of one of Smith's sisters, left the party and returned, upset. They say he started lashing out at people at the party. Smith was shot in the neck.

Police Chief Harvey Curry said he does not know what started the argument, and did not immediately recover the gun used.
