A prescription drug benefit plan is being finalized in the U.S. House of Representatives, that supporters say would modernize Medicare.

Congressman Chip Pickering, a member of the health subcommittee, said the plan would reduce the cost of medications for senior citizens to the $2 to $5 range.

"This is an historic step to create a prescription drug benefit as part of Medicare," said Pickering. "It increases the choice you have within Medicare or with a private plan. It will on average ,even over the 20,000 number, reduce prescription drug costs by about 30 percent for our seniors."

Congressman Ronnie Shows supports a democratic proposal to lower the cost of prescription drugs across the board and allow voluntary prescription coverage for Medicare patients, for a $25 monthly premium.
